Leadership Training
School Leadership and Management in Finland & Estonia 9-13/10/2023

Introduction

Both Estonia and Finland are known for having strong education systems with high levels of student achievement and teacher professionalism.
However, there are some differences in the education systems of the two countries. For example, Estonia has made significant progress in recent years in improving its education system, particularly in the areas of digital education and teacher training. Estonia has also implemented a comprehensive national curriculum reform that emphasizes student-centered learning and the development of 21st-century skills.
Estonia’s basic education is at the top of the world. Estonian students have achieved consistently high scores in the PISA tests. Education is valued in Estonian society — it has always been considered both a guarantee of individual success and one of the main drivers of the country’s development. Estonia has made high quality early years education a priority. The history of formal education in Estonia dates back to the 13–14th centuries when the first monastic and cathedral schools were founded. By now, Estonia has combined a belief in learning with equal-access technology to create one of world’s best education systems.
Meanwhile, Finland has long been recognized as a leader in education, with a strong focus on equity, teacher autonomy, and a comprehensive approach to education that includes early childhood education, primary and secondary education, and vocational education and training. Finland’s education system has also emphasized the importance of play and outdoor learning, as well as a culture of trust and respect between teachers and students.
